Vendors and manufacturers of smart card chips are hoping for bulks of business, as government of Denmark issued electronic passports, national identity cards and health cards, say technology suppliers.
About two-thirds of smart card industry business is still provided by SIM market. However, there has been a declining trend in the revenues coming from this market. Smart card industry is struggling, with complete commoditization of SIM cards, as per industry experts. Added convenience is provided to the user by SIM solution. Secure transmission of personal data and information is enabled by the high data-storage capacity combined with tight security features.
As part of the new electronic passport scheme, rolled out by Denmark in October this year (2006), about 250,000 passports are likely to be issued towards the end of this year. It’s planned that around 800,000 electronic passports will be issued per year. Gemalto – the digital security provider – is shouldered with the responsibility of producing these passports.
“The new cards will help prevent ID theft, and protect the privacy of individual”, as stated by a Research Analyst at RNCOS, who has recently researched a report on “Global Smart Card Industry - Future Outlook (2007)”. According to this report, driven by explosive growth in emerging markets, such as China and India, the demand for SIM cards has been growing 50% per year.
