Notebook sales overtook PC sales for the first time in the US due to the increasing customer demand for mobility and advanced technology.

Market intelligence firm IDC unveiled that the quarterly notebook computer sales have surpassed the desktop sales for the very first time in the US, as per the news published by afp.

Notebook sales occupied 55.2% of the total computer sales in Q3 2008, registering 18% increase over Q3 2007. This is the first time ever the notebook sales have surpassed the 50% mark. Also, during the same period, a record 9.5 Million notebooks were shipped.

The primary reason for the tremendous growth in the notebook sales is the consumer market that continued to be the major driving force. However, the commercial sector is contributing significantly towards the phenomenal rise in the notebook market too.

Besides, the small and medium markets, enterprise and public sector buyers are finding good value in mobility. So now, the trend is shifting from more powerful machines towards the smaller and less powerful machines that are focused completely on the use of Internet.

Moreover, the portable and relatively new notebooks are gaining huge popularity due to the people’s desire to stay connected globally even while travelling. Consequently, the notebook sales outshined the sales of PCs in the US.

Although the sales figures of notebooks soared high during the back-to-school season and the critical phase of the financial crisis that flooded the headlines but didn’t impacted the performance of PC market immediately.

Despite the adverse affect on the PC sales due to prolonged economic meltdown, consumers are apparently considering PC an essential product and not a secondary item. But still, the figures reveal the reality that mobility has become a priority for consumers.

According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “Inclination of consumers towards latest technology and mobility has led the notebook sales to surpass the PC sales in the US. As the vendors are launching latest ultra-portables, the market would continue to remain quite heated. In future, though the mobility would retain its position to be a primary growth factor, the economy can impact the market unpredictably.”
