Watch Over : CCTV Reduced Crime Count Significantly in UK
Jul 24, 2007

The consolidated market for electronic security systems in UK had grown in current end-user prices in 2005. CCTV outperformed intruder alarms as the biggest sector in 2004 and settled at a share of around 31% in the total market in 2005, a steep rise of about 45% since 2001, according to a recent reportUK CCTV Market Update (2007)” by RNCOS.

CCTVs have been accepted as success all across UK. Recent statistics have showed a decline in number of crimes in regions where surveillance devices were installed to keep vigil on crime. Crimes witnessed by surveillance devices’ operators in Norwich during May 2006-April 2007 dropped by around 290 against the same period for 2006.

Now CCTV cameras are all set to make their place in residential areas to keep an eye on anti-social behavior. Meanwhile, top police official from Yarmouth called CCTV a success after 280 fewer offences were recorded on 55 cameras deployed in the town.

Steve Morphew, leader of Norwich City Council, said he was quite happy with results. He added that as CCTV operators could warn the police early, the vigilance devices were now being deployed to tackle the situations before any serious mishap. Morphew called the plan of installing CCTV in residential areas with mobile WI-FI system, which could be deployed temporarily at hot-spot zones (in terms of crime), exciting, as reported by EDP 24 on June 29, 2007.

As per the RNCOS report, “UK CCTV Market Update (2007)”, since long, CCTV has been seen as an important tool for crime prevention with a multitude of uses. And in future too, the public concern for safety, reactions to the rate of crime, and a need to replace and upgrade the existing security systems as organizations revamp their premises, will continue to propel the market for CCTV devices. Due to this, the CCTV market in UK is forecasted to clock in a CAGR of over 4% during the period from 2007 to 2011.

The market research report comprehensively evaluates the UK CCTV market and defines the market by region, sub-sectors, installations, and consumer segmentation, including retail industry, facilities management, and banking and finance. The report gives a rational analysis of driving forces, challenges and opportunities in the market.
