Bangladesh is an attractive market for mobile services because of its huge population of 144 million but low mobile penetration of around 2.8%. The sixth mobile phone operator, “Warid Telecom” in Bangladesh has launched operations in country with an objective to grab a huge share in the most rapidly growing market in world, which is owned by Abu Dhabi Group based in Gulf. In the initial year of Warid Telecom operation, it is banking on at least 5 million subscribers. “Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing markets in the world. And we hope we can grab a big share by offering better value added services, competitive tariffs and European standard network quality. We launched operations today, covering around 70 pct (of the) population of the country with more than 900 network base stations,” Warid Telco’s spokesman Zeeshan Kingshuk Huq said in news published on Forbes . Mobile market in Bangladesh, country with a population of 138 million, increased to 21 million subscribers last year. And, by 2008 the rate of subscribers will likely reach 22 million mark because of powerful economic growth of the country. At the present juncture, Telekom Malaysia - owned “TMIB” has got about 7 million subscribers. GrameenPhone, the telecom company Telenor has reached the market with more than 50% of the market shares. The other operators, CityCell, Bangalink and Tele talk are in the fray. As per a research analyst at RNCOS, “Mobile market is thriving in Bangladesh. The immense growth that’s being observed by the sector implies that consumer will get best service at an affordable price. On the other hand, operators will also make plenty of profit by this expansion in market. This increase in the mobile service operators’ numbers arriving Bangladeshi market indicates that the mobile market is set to grow further in the country.” With government officials of Bangladesh working overtime to enhance access to telecommunications services and the resulting economic and social advantages, there is a strong possibility that Bangladesh can become the Asia-Pacific’s biggest telecom market, next to India.
