The Cell phone industry is the fastest developing industry in the telecom sector. Pantech, which is one of the leading handset manufacturing company of Korea, has plans to enter the Peruvian cell phone market. On May 21, 2007, the leading handset manufacturing company Pantech, announced to have signed a deal with the 2nd largest mobile service provider Claro, for the supply of five new GSM enabled handset - PG-C120, PG-3210, PG-6100, A100 and S100, as per the news published on ZDNet Korea. As per the news published on ZDNet Korea , Jay Yim, the Head of Overseas Marketing Division, Pantech Group, said: “Since 2005, we have significantly expanded our operations in Latin America, by strengthening the partnership with the largest and the most reliable mobile service carrier of the region. It shows how important this region is to Pantech. The launch of our GSM handsets in Peru will help us ramp up our business in Latin America.” Recent statistics have revealed that in early 2007, 308 million owned a cell phone and it was more than 12% of the cell phone subscribers (there are approximately 2.6 mobile subscriber in the world) were in Latin America and the Caribbean. The cell phone industry was the fastest growing industry among the other telecom sectors since the economic upturn of 2003. It crossed the 50% milestone in early 2007. GSM, the most preferred cellular technology, holds a market share of nearly 69%, which is not a small share in the cell phone industry. All the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (including Haiti, since 2006) are using GSM technology. The GSM market in Latin America is strengthening its market position at the expenditure of TDMA (time division multiple access), as most of the Latin American TDMA operators have switched their technology to GSM from CDMA. There are some CDMA Latin American operators who are installing the GSM network. Industry experts declared that GSM would constantly record an upward movement in the cellular industry and increase its market share in the coming years. CDMA operators are loosing their customers to GSM operators as GSM operators offer their customers handsets at lower prices. As per a research analyst at RNCOS, “The deal signed between pantech and claro, the Peruvian affiliate of America movil, which is the largest cell phone service supplier of Latin America, highlights the fact that pantech group has been able to provide its customers in Latin America with satisfactory services over the years.” Related Market Research Reports: |
