Nokia is going to spread its roots in Africa as the market is fast growing and is largely untapped. Nokia wants to make the region its next big market of wireless.
Nokia – the largest make of mobile phones in the world, is making investments in Africa to make the continent its next big wireless market. According to the news published in ZeeNews , Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Chief Executive, Nokia, noticed that Nokia became famous and topmost mobile maker in China because of the reason that it came and invested in that region before others and created powerful channels.
In the ZeeNews , Kallasvuo said, "Things are also starting to happen in a major way in Africa. We are seeing things in Africa now that we saw in China seven or eight years ago.” But the executive didn’t mention about the African countries Nokia considers as big opportunities.
In the last week of May, Gartner, a research firm, said that growth in countries like Egypt and South Africa as the impetus for a 6% rise in phone sales in Europe, Middle East and Africa in the quarter one.
In past some years, many African mobile markets have seen big changes, developing from the state-run monopolies to emulous markets. In the past two-three years, this liberation has spurred much of the growth. But the markets are now transcending from this phase of volatile growth into a more mature and controlled phase. So the operators are also changing their focus in these changing markets to suit the needs of the customers.
Pre-paid billing availability is another solid reason for the rapid expansion of subscriber base in Africa as most of the people lies in low per-capita income group and it has become easier for them to have access to mobile services because they can pay as per their own convenience.
According to RNCOS research analyst, by the year 2009, subscriber base is predicted to rise up to 24 Million. Because Africa is a fast growing and largely untapped market, there exists a strong potential for growth in mobile handset sales as well as subscriber base in coming years.
